What is Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)?

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. It combines trauma-focused techniques with CBT approaches to help reduce trauma-related emotional and behavioural difficulties. TF-CBT can also involve parents or carers as part of treatment.

TF-CBT is primarily designed for children and adolescents who are experiencing difficulties following a traumatic experience. It can be used following different types of trauma, including abuse, violence, traumatic loss and other distressing events. Parents or carers may also be involved in treatment where appropriate.

Not necessarily. A PTSD diagnosis is not always required for trauma-focused therapy. Treatment may be considered when someone is experiencing clinically significant trauma-related symptoms, with the appropriate approach depending on their age, symptoms and individual circumstances.

There is no fixed number of sessions for everyone. The length of therapy depends on the person’s age, symptoms, circumstances and treatment needs. The TF-CBT model is generally structured as a short-term treatment, with research supporting treatment delivered over approximately 8–25 sessions for children and adolescents.
